Come join us on Saturday, April 21st 9-2 as we celebrate nature during our annual Earth Day Celebration.   Fun activities for the young and the young at heart!   If you are interested any of these activities, please register.  All activities are FREE, but we gladly accept donations to help support our work!

 

A full day of events are planned including a native plant sale, Art of Nature openning, turtle sanctuary dedication, critters from our friends at GA DNR and The Amphibian Foundation, photo booth, and games.  Prizes for those who use alternative transportation to the event.

 

Outdoor Yoga  9:00-10:00 (Registration required)

Kick-off the Blue Heron Nature Preserve's Earth Day Celebration right with a public outdoor yoga class at the Preserve. The class is free! If you have the means and enjoy your experience a $5 donation is recommended.

Ronald Dill, a certified yoga instructor who currently teaches at Oglethorpe University, will be leading the group through the fundamental elements of yoga that will be beneficial for yogi's of all practice levels.

 

Forest Walk 10-11 (Registration required)

Come join our friends at EcoAddendum on a hike through the Blue Heron forest as we learn about the tremendous diversity of life found a typical upland and floodplain forest.  

 

Bird Walk 11-12 (Registration required)

Our partner Atlanta Audubon Society will provide a naturalist lead tour through the favorite birding spots at Blue Heron.  Over 120 different species have been identified at the Preserve.   Spring time is a great time of year to see both permanent residents and migratory species who use the Preserve as a refuge on their journey north.

 

Vamos Chicos EcoArt Bus 11-12  (Registration Required)

Art has gone on the road thanks to our friends at Vamos Chicos.  Blending art, science and language the talented staff of Vamos Chicos will demonstrate how art and nature go hand in hand with a fun activity for the whole family.


Mini Bee Hive Inspection 12:00-1:00 (Registration Required)

Our friends from the Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association will tell you all about bees and how they an other pollinators play such an important role in ensuring healthy plant communities.   You will not only learn about bees, but also have a chance to visit MABA's demonstration hives at the Preserve and see first hand what goes on inside a beehive.

 

Green Theatre Group - Outdoor Performance 12:00-1:00 (Registration Required)

For the 3rd year we will have an original production from the creative performance group known as the Green Theatre Group.  Each performance blends a story about nature that brings an appreciation and understanding about the wonders around us for young and old.   And what better place to have it than in the forest of Blue Heron.  

 

Art of Nature Opening & Tour 12:30-1:30 (Registration Required)

Come experience art in the outdoors at the opening of this year's Art of Nature exhibit.  Five artists have been selected to display there work April 21st - June 1st featuring site-specific art installations inspired by our pollinators.  The artists will be on hand to take you on a tour of the exhibits and have a chance to explain their inspiration.   

 

Farmer D's Organic Gardening Talk 1:30-2:00 (Registration Required)

Come to the Blue Heron Community Garden and learn all about organic gardening from the premier expert in Atlanta, Farmer D's Organics.  You'll learn how easy and fun gardening can be that is friendly to the earth and good for your body.

 

Blueway Trail Tours 1:00-1:30, 2:00-2:30 (Registration Required)

Come see all the improvements being made along the trails at the Preserve.  As part of our Blueway Trails capital campaign we are making improvements to our almost 3 miles of trails to make them more connected, safer and easier to navigate for all visitors.  See what has been accomplished and hear about what is planned and how you can support us.

 

Field Education Experience 1:00-2:00

Blue Heron's talented educators will take you on an adventure demonstrating our unique teaching style that immerses young and old in the outdoors stimulating the inquisitive mind to explore the world around us.  The experience will showcase our Field Education Centers unique outdoor classrooms showcasing the 4 habitats found at the Preserve. 

 

Mini Critter Camp 1:00-2:00 (Registration Required)

Our partners at The Amphibian Foundation will show what fun you will have when you attend their Critter Camps.  Not only do you learn about the amazing world of frogs, toads, salamanders and newts, but you will have a chance see them live and learn about the importance of protecting them from experts in the field.
